8n Distrubutor screw up

Yeah I diod it took it out because I dropped a point hold down screw ito the distributor and now I am AWAY out of time. Anyone have a good start from scratch static time method? I ahve tried using the one in the pwners manual with little success. Hard ot see through timing port with loader installed.....Thanks

With the #1 on TDC (top dead center) put the distributor in with the rotor cap pointing forward and then put the #1 wire on that space then with the rotation of the distributor follow around in the sequential firing order this will run. I'm not sure what the firing order or the rotation of the distribuor is CW or CCW the firing order on most 4 cylinders is 1432. I hope this helps.

I'm guessing its a side mount not a front mount right??? If its a front mount then it only fits in one way and can not be put in out of time. Now if its a side mount you need to get the #1 piston up to TDC and then line up the rotor to the #1 wire on the cap and drop it in. The turn it a little bit one wya ot the other to get it close and then try to start it. If it back fires bad your 180 out and you can either pull it again and try to put it in right or just switch wires across the cap either on works. Also an FO-04 I-T manual would help you a lot

The 8N side distributor turns CCW, firing order is 1-2-4-3. I just went through this with the same engine mounted in a Worthington golf course tractor.

Too late now, but I always stuffed a paper towel into any hole in the plate where a screw could fall in.Also a long pickup magnet is a life saver.

the paper towel would ahve ben good and the long magnet just would not pull it out; either of the long magnets or the flexible claw I have used back in the day.
Good thing because the inside of the distributor was plum full of the usual ranch detritus and needed to be cleaned up. Sunny side and all that.

Yeah a side mount thought I mentioned that. The inside was trashed and full of detritus so it needed to be cleaned anyway. I finally found the timing mark on the flywheel at night with an LED penlight should mak eit easier. I have done the TDC thang as usua using the front plug as number 1. THe tractor ran for over a year until the coil crapped out thought I would do the right thing and do the whole thing oh boy. It was odd that the nameplate on the distributor was facing 180 out in other words facing inboard contrary to all my shop pictures. SO that would just be the clamp holding the point plate and could be changed around while the distributor is out then do the TDC and 4 degree static. Another good thing wass the copper foil connector used for god knows how many decades in so many applicatioins was almmost torn though so I had to make a wire for that. SO the sun is out etc and we'll hit 'er again. Even a blind hog can root up an acorn!!!!!!!

good idea. I believe the rotation is CCW and the firing order according to the shop manual is 1243 set points to .016 etc then away we should go! Thanks for the suggestion

Is that a fomoco part number for that manual? I have done a few searches and found nothing that resembles that number. FO-04 I-T. Please advise thanks much

then in the same area after that new page comes up click on ANTIQUE TRACTORS AND EQUIPMENT after the new page comes up in the search line type in
"I T tractor manuals" then a lot of the manuals will come up. I know I have seen them in other tractor sales also can't think where right now.
Maybe this site has them.

put the engine on top dead center. line roter up with #1 when you put it in. turn on key. put spark plug on the #1 WIRE that is lined up with the roter. turn the distrubutor back and forth. watch for the spark. do it till it just sparks then try to start you can do the distrubtor at any of the four positions

geez all was going well and this looks good but now I ahve no spark at all. I have to give up for the day and think about this. There 12v to the coil but nothing out and nothing at the distributor lead. New 12v coil. hot to + then - to distributor and notthing. Rats this is making me crazy. If I ahve power to the coil then there must be some kind of ground short in the distributor? I had to replace the copper foil hot lead and used 16 ga wire maybe I am shorting out there. Oh well tomorrow is another day. This looks like a great tip however.

tried this and it almost worked at least it is trying to fire. Last problem found was distributor lead gasket to flat oval head screw inside distributor was allowing occasional ground short made for some interesting trouble shooting. Maybe later tonight I can start again and find the 4 degree mark as I need a flashlight due to loader interference. This worked quite well as now it is tryiong to fire so it could still enough out to make it difficult. THANKS for this tip.
