i just bought a ford 8n it dont like too start i have cleaned the carb if it sets over nite the only way i can get it too start is to hold my hand over the carb then it will start seems to me like not enough air and too much fuel what do i do any sugestions will be appreciated

if you have rebuilt the carb then you might see if the air cleaner is clogged up. several years ago I found mine was really clogged, had several inches on mud/oil in the bottom. cleaned and replaced oil. really made a different.

6v or 12v, front or side distributor?

" not enough air and too much fuel "

By putting your hand over the carb, you are in effect choking it.....in other words, reducing the air, not increasing it.

Check for fuel. Get a can & put it under the carb. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the carb; as long as the fuel is turned on, you should see gas flowing out of the carb. Let it run for at least 30 seconds. If it’s a dribble, or runs for 5 seconds & stops, or none at all, you have solved half the problem: it’s fuel related. If gas flows well out of the carb & only stops when you turn it off at the sediment bowl, chances are very good it’s not a fuel problem.

Post back w/ results & more info.

6 volt front distributor it is not that putting by hand over the carb makes it start is like when i starve it for air then release it it will fire have checked and it is getting fuel also it runs great after started if i shut off it will pop right off but if i leave it and come back later i will fight too get it started again

Mike.......you do realize when you hold yer hand over the carb mouth, you are CHOKING yer engine, and FLOODING yer engine don't you???

Learn to start yer tractor. NO CHOKE!!!..... Understand??? 2-turns of glass fuel valve; (ALWAYS remember to turn yer glass valve OFF after running 'cuz iff'n you don't, GRAVITY will empty yer fuel tank and FLOOD yer cylinders, frown!) Ignition switch ON; Throttle 1/3; Then after 2-rumpas of starter and only then a QUICK PULL of the spring loaded choke. It should start. Then feather the choke 1/4" iff'n necessary. (usually is NOT necessary)

Ennytime you have "starting issues"; change yer sparkies........NO ARGUE!!!!
Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025". Don't throw yer FLOODED sparkies away, just clean'n'dry them, one-atta-time and save'um fer the next time. (and there will be a next time) .........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Dell... thanks for the advise i will try your suggestions i realize choking it will flood it but it seems choking by hand and releasing it was the only way to start i appreciate your help i will let you know how it works out

" when i starve it for air then release it it will fire "

Excuse me, but as I said, and as Dell said, that's choking it. You are filling the intake w/ gas as a result of the increased vacuum w/ your hand over the carb, and when you release it, it tries to fire.

" it is getting fuel "

How did you check that?

When you cleaned the carb, did you take it apart? sounds like the float level may be too low. Also when you remove bottom plug to check for fuel let in run into a pint jar and time how long it takes to fill it. It should fill in 2 to 3 minutes.

Get a can of starting fluid.

While each N has it's own starting sequence, none of them will start well by just yanking out the choke rod & holding it out for 5 or 10 seconds while the engine cranks. This is an updraft carb w/ a gravity fuel system; it is by it's very nature subject to flooding. Too much choke makes it happen.

Try this:

Remove the breather hose at the carb.

Key on, gas on 2 full turns, clutch in, 3/4 throttle, press the starter button. Let it crank for at least 3 - 4 seconds then spray the starting fluid into the carb throat. No choke!

If it starts (and runs) on starting fluid, you have a carb problem.
