When rebuilding an 8N with the kit that includes Pistons, Sleeves and Rings. DO THIS FIRST

When you receive the kit, take the time, On the BENCH, to put rings in the sleeve and measure GAP.

If the ring gap on first opening the rebuild Kit is NOT between 0.007 and 0,017 for all 8 compression rings, then send the kit back back and get a kit that is gapped correctly.

This will get you one step closer to do it right the first time

The ring and piston sets for my '49 8N were were all seperately packaged. The piston/sleeve kits for my '51 8N had the rings already installed on the pistons. Fortunately I had no problem with the gaps.

The 1950 kit I received had four individually packaged sleeves, four boxed piston and four separate ring packs

The 12 individual ring gaps measured minimum 0.022 and 120+ maximum. Spec is 0.007-0.017.

Unfortunately I did not find the problem on first inspection. I found the problem after completing the rebuild and noticing fresh oil in the exhaust. Ugh

I am apparently watched by a guardian angel. Everything I've bought in a kit for this tractor has ended up working fine. The one issue I had was I was sold a 12 volt conversion kit with a ceramic resistor of 3.5 ohms. I just removed it from the circuit, and replaced it with nothing. No problems since.

For a while I had no added resistor. That was on me. Now it's on Pertronix, Those are their instructions. No additional (or even factory OEM) resistors. 4 or 5 years now, no problems.

Excellent! I found the 12 volt conversion fairly straight forward. Plenty of comments in the forum FOR the resistor AND without the resistor.
