I noticed the teeth on the flywheel for my 51 8N are worn and it needs to be replaced. Could I just turn it over because the teeth look good on the other side???

re you experiencing some starter problems or just eyeballing?
No, you can't "just turn it over".

thaey are chamfered for easier engagement. since you would be doing the work to install it.. might as well put a new one on.. they are not too expensive.

plus to remove the old one without destroying it will be more work than putting a new one on.. and by the time you have heated the bajeebers out of it to get it off and then back on.. you may not get it to lock in good.

flipping a ring gear is for when you are slap but broke but have plenty of time and still have gas in your torches and need the tractor yesterday and the parts house is closed till next week.

and then you will still eat up the bendinx on the starter bery likely..

Rozie.......would you believe the flyweel ring teeth are supposed to be "worn" and NOT STRAIGHT EDGE??? You can NOT remove the ring gear without drilling it as it is "shrink-wrapped" onto the flywheel outer rim groove. Read yer FO-4 manual. Tell us why? Are you having starter engagement problems??? Remember, the starter Bendix has gotta be "squeekie" clean or it will grind trying to engage the starter ring gear. I use spray brake cleaner, just squirt the 'ell outer and letter drip dry. Simple, eh? ........Dell

From the rings gears I have had (all 3), one side is beveled and one side is not.
If the ring gear is bad, best to buy a new one.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I haven't had any problems with engagement so maybe I will just leave it alone. There are two sections where it is worn down. I'm not sure if it is worth the work at this point if I haven't had any problems. As my grandfather (The one who bought this tractor brand new) used to say....If it aint broke.......don't fix it.

Thanks again for the advice
