I've ben working on a 8n and I will give as much info as I can. First off when it was purchased it had a knocking noise. Got it in the shop and drained the oil and the pan had coolant in it. pulled the head and # 2 sleeve was gone. Pulled the pan and the sleeve was in the oil pan all smashed up.
#4 sleeve pulled out by hand and all of the sleeve edges were below the block deck. by the way it dose not have cast sleeves it has the thin steel. #2 bore has about a 2 inch crack about half way down. I have two questions
#1 Is there anything that can be put on the outside of the sleeve or the inside of the bore to keep the coolant from leaking out after the sleeve is installed.
#2 what should the sleeve standout be if any. thanks for any and all replies.

Jim,

The sleeves should not be loose in the bore. If the small top lip is below the top of the deck at all, the movement of the piston will eventually cause the sleeve to become loose and move up and down with the piston. This will eventually break the small top lip and the piston will end up as you found #2. If a new sleeve is still below the top of the deck, the same thing will happen again. A good machine shop may be able to shim it up. Another option is to have the block bored and have a custom sleeve installation done. If this route is chosen, have the machine shop leave a small lip on the bottom of the cylinder to hold the sleeve. All these dry sleeve engines must be a press fit of the sleeve, but need some sort of retainer to keep them from eventually moving.

Sometimes a product like Locktite is used. But again, the sleeve needs to be a press fit, so nothing should be able to seep by. For coolant to have gotten by on yours, there must have also been a problem with the head gasket.

Not sure exactly of the Ford spec for this engine, but typically .001 -- .003. I have also seen the block decked completely flat after the installation of custom sleeves. Considering the condition of your block, you may want to source a good replacement.
