8N Ford Magneto

I have a front mounted distributor and was going to try to install this magneto on the tractor except there might be a piece missing on the slotted part where the tabs are that make contact with the cam that turns the distributor. When it's bolted on it does not turn the gears inside the magneto. Can anyone tell me what's wrong or what's missing? I will post the serial numbers off the magneto tomorrow. Look at the pics. lady di here dosen t look like there s anything wrong with the tab that slids in to the cam. it can only go in one way the tab is off set. can you turn it by hand and see it spin (the mag.that is?)

It comes apart in the center and when it's on the tractor and you turn the motor over, the gears don't turn. There is space between the two tabs on the magneto where it bolts onto the motor. It fits flush but you can move the gear with your fingers with no resistance. Is there a spacer that goes between the magneto base and the motor? Thanks. Any help will be appreciated.

Not that i can remeber the two tabs go to a press fitted gear in the elbow than a long shaft that turns the mag.You might get more help on the 9n 2n 8n forum theres guys over there that still run the magneto who can help you more.

LadyDi........from yer description of no resistance when turning, sounds like the right-angle gears are stripped. .......Dell, notta-mag authority

The gears in the magneto turn if you turn it by hand. When you break it in half you can turn the bottom gear with the slots on it and it will turn the top gear that works the magneto and vice-a-versa. It just doesn't engage the cam when it's bolted to the front of the motor. The gears are sharp and not worn. Just wondered if anyone could post a picture of one of these so I can compare it to mine? Thanks.
