8N front distributor wiring

Ordered the wiring kit for 8N 6 volt front distributer and connected all wires, added a new voltage regulator. Connected positive post on battery to ground and negative post to starter solenoid. The wires get very hot to touch. What have I connected wrong?

hwctbird , Disconnect the wires to the generator and see if wires still get hot. It could be the contacts in the voltage regulator are stuck/welded together.

So much to consider so let's go...Did you use JMOR's 'WIRING PICTOGRAMS' and the OEM Manuals as your roadmap? Did you rebuild, time, test, and mount the distributor on
the engine correctly? You do know there is only one correct way to mount it, right? Distributor has the offset male tang on the cam and weight unit. The engine cam
shaft has the mating offset female slot and the whole unit must be mounted correctly as one. If you force the unit down 180 DEG off, the nano-second power is applied
teh unit will try to orientate itself right but it will bust the aluminum base and render it useless junk. Then you either swap out a spare unit or pull all the
hardware out of the base and assemble into a new or good used base then make sure you mount it correctly next time. Don't assume just because you have a 6V battery it
is wired correctly for the 6V/POS GRN system. Why did you install a new voltage regulator? Did the old one test bad? Did you get the correct VR? Does your GEN have the
OEM fan belt tensioner attached? without proper fan belt tension you will never charge the battery. OEM Ballast Resistor in place? Finally, all wiring kits are not
created equal. Low budget aftermarket kits often have vinyl covered wiring, not rubber or the best, cloth insulated like original, and never are OEM color coded
correct so don't assume they are. Never just use color as a guide - colors don't conduct electrons. Your trusty VOM set to Continuity is the key. Eschew any test light
as well. Always disconnect battery power when wiring. Verify at least 3 times all before power is connected. Lighting kits were never a factory installed item on N-
series Tractors. Light were dealer supplied optional accessories. Some farmers and shadetree mechanics wired themselves and many were, and still are done incorrectly
and account for a percentage of electrical issues. Once wiring is correct and tractor runs correctly, then you can reconnect your lights. FORD 4-CYL Firing Order is 1,
2, 4, 3 CCW. It is a common mistake to get #3 and #4 plug wires crossed. Get a copy of 75 Tips For N-Owners by Bruce(VA) for helpful info to save.
