Has anyone bought one of those gas tank level gauges for an 8n ford. Wondered if they work okay and what is the cost of one. Saw one on ebay awhile back. cant find it now. thanks norm

This has always worked well for me.

Cheaper too.

Overall length 10 5/16

From the bottom to top of each mark

1 gal = 1 ?
2 gal = 2 1/16
3 gal = 2 ?
4 gal = 3 15/32
5 gal = 4 3/16
6 gal = 4 7/8
7 gal = 5 9/16
8 gal = 6 ?
9 gal = 7 3/16
10 gal = 8 1/16

" Use the wrench that came with the 8N."

That's a plow wrench, not a gas gauge. The graduations on the wrench are in inches for measuring furrow depth. The graduations on the gas stick are for measuring gallons in the tank & are not in inches.

I bought one, it works like it should no issues with mine in the almost year I had it on. cant really say for certain how accurate it is in terms of 1/4 tank, 1/2 tank, etc but it does work.

I just look in it  I cheat tho I always tote a maglight...

I don't use the numbers on the wrench. When fuel level is half way up the wrench you have half a tank. 1/3 way is 1/3rd tank, etc.

No it's not.

That's why I put the tape measure in the picture.

Five inches on the wrench (half of it) is not 5 gallons of gas in the tank. It's about 6. At 7 inches on the wrench, you do not have 7 gallons in the tank, you have about 9 gallons.

If "close counts", go with the wrench. Or just look in the tank.

I have had one for quite a few years. It was one of the first things I bought for my 8N. Mine seems to be fairly accurate. I believe I paid about $15 for it.

I have the same type of gauge on my John Deere mower, and it works OK. For my Fords, I just pull out my ever-present tape measure and see how wet it is when I stick it into the tank.

I used to do it like Hobo too until one day I couldnt see in so I bent downl and blew in the tank to make ripples. The gas was full up to the top and it blew up in my eyes and face. I bought one from Red Rock. Cant help stupid.

I purchased one from Red Rock about 8 years ago. Makes an OK gas cap, though a lousy fuel gauge. The float became saturated with fuel after about 12 months. A year ago I had to replace the rubber gasket, which was badly cracked and leaked anytime the tank was over half-full, with cork.

The cheapest solution? Keep your tank full. A full tank gives you 8-10 hours of operating time.

Are you talking about one like in the picture?
If so, be careful which one you get.
Someone gave me one as a gift.
It wasn't vented so the tractor wouldn't stay running with it tight.

mines is the same way , i have to leave it a bit loose .i guess it measures the gas level okay , i look at it then take it off and peak inside . old habits never die i guess.

I've had one of those for about 6 years. It came from Carpenters and it works. At the time I think it was about $12/15.

Just a nice straight dry, clean stick that u can see the gas level(wetness) on when you dip it and pull it out --some folks get fancy and mark a paint stirring stick with a permanent marker--mark in one inch increments--on average in pretty heavy cutting u will use about an inch an hour..Works fine for me...

I carry a mini streamlight all the time--amazing light for its size--only thing i don't
like is that it gives no warning, it just goes aut suddenly or will not come on when the
battery gets low..

old habits never die i guess.

You're right about that Rick!
I use a clean paint stir stick on mine. When I remember.
I have one in every tool box.
When the tractor quits, I get off, check it with the stick, cuss,
go get some gas to put in the tank and put the clean paint stir
stick back in the tool box. Saves on stir sticks I guess!

I'm joking of course, its not a good idea to run them empty,
but I won't deny that it has happened.

For 26 years I've used a paint stirrer unmarked that's cut to fit in my on board tool box. I can judge how much gas is in it in rough measurements, full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, etc. Never saw the need for finer measurements.

I've used one now for a few years. Works good. May buy more for my other tractors.
Sure you can use a dip stick. but I have found the gauge to be worth the cost.
Each to their own.
I'd say give it a try. Not that much money.

I've had a few lawn mowers with the style of gauge. Never had one that worked correctly. Fuel tank had to be filled till it over flowed to show full on the gauge. They would read empty when it was still at least 1/4 full.

I have a dowel rod that works good.

One thing was drilled into my think head early if you use
it leave it as you started . It is no more expensive to top
of fluids when done or at lunch . It was not a good day when
you ran out of a fluid during the day on the farm !!

Bought one a year ago, beats opening the cap and looking in, or carrying a stick, etc. Maybe not real accurate, but lets me know if I've got gas.

Gave $21 for it with shipping...been worth it.

Checked my ebay history, guy I got it from isn't selling anymore...sorry.
