Have 1950 8n with broke gear. Question is should I drive and use tractor with this one tooth missing or repair. Has noise but seems to be ok.

With out more info hard to say yes or no. One tooth missing can cause major problems depending on which gear and if it is a gear that is used a lot or one you can do with out

Had a broken tooth on my John Deere "B". Used it that way for many years til one day in February I was using it to bring wood to the house when the tooth picked up in the stiff transmission grease and got between two gears. Bent a shaft in the transmission. The only way to get the bent shaft out was to split the tractor and saw the shaft in two. Did that outside in February weather in Wisconsin. I had never split a tractor before.

Two things, first, is the snapped-off tooth still lurking in the transmission of has it possibly come out when the oil was drained, or been otherwise fished out?

The chance is likely not great that it will eventually get picked up by sloshing oil and get in one of the gears causing further destruction, but it does exist.

If you REALLY have an 8N (vs. a 9N or 2N) it has a "constant-mesh collar shift transmission" and ALL gears are in mesh, turning/wearing against each other even when that particular gear is not selected.

So there will always be some wear/filings going on, and there's at least some chance that the broken gear and the gear it meshes with MAY eventually jam and cause more destruction, IMHO.

(quoted from post at 05:07:45 01/03/21) Thanks, I found the piece of tooth and cleaned out trans.

If it was my tractor I would probably put off opening it up til I had to take it down til I had timebto take it apart and relly check it out. If you can see the gear, maybe look around for a goo one to replace it. I about to have to rebuild my late FIL's 3N, and it needs a full set of bearings, the lift arm pivots repaired, etc.
