8N generator misbehaving

I've just put a new wiring harness, regulator, ignition switch, coil, distributor, resistor on a 1949 8N, and it runs fine. But now the regulator points on the left side have fused, so when I connect the battery, the generator turns. What is going on here?? Feels like generator is shorting or something and needs replacing, but what are your thoughts?

If you ground the field & connect the armature wire to the battery terminal, the generator will "motor".

You wired it wrong, or you got the wrong v/r or the wrong wiring harness.

And, chances are real good that the v/r is now a paper weight.

ruce, you forgot to mention that the new reg might have been junk.
Didn't change battery ground polarity did you?

sounds like you just came up with a way to make the N tractor a hybrid drive--replace voltage regulator and check to see if you are positive or negative ground.

Whoever had this tractor before me had the battery in backwards, i.e. negative ground. 8Ns are positive ground right, so do I need to polarize the generator and buy a new regulator??
