8n generator

I-dislike-6v

I have a 1949 8n with a 6v generator I can only get the generator to charge at about 10 amps when I ground the field thermal on in has new voltage regulator wondering if anyone has any helpful advice on where to go from here

The recent VRs for early 6V have a poor sucess record. I had to go through 3 to get one that would work decent. The best bet is to take the gen and VR off the tractor and take both to a shop that can set up a 6V charging system. They can adjust the VR on the bench for best charge without boiling the batt. When you put them back on check the wiring for resistance due to age. Good wire should read less than 0.2 ohm end to end. This is a common problem.

You’re taking both ,at that’s what I think you mean to test .

This a three brush with cut out ,or a two with cut out and voltage regulator? I’m not familiar with ford 8

Just need enough to charge storage battery and power lights right ? 10 amp
By the way in articles is references to generator systems
Like this link that are helpful to me .

I believe its a 3 brush generator. It has a ground terminal, a armature terminal, and a field terminal, and a adjustment screw on the back of it. I know the old voltage regulator wasnt working correctly because not only was it not charging but it was alway cause the generator to discharge the battery. I figured the wire going to the field terminal might be the problem so I ran a new wire but it still doesn't charge. The new regulator does at least stop it from killing the battery while sitting but it isn't charging while running. Both voltage regulator are 2 pole. My problem is I lack knowledge on how the 6 volt systems work. I work as a mechanic in the automotive field but obviously everything is 12 volt and for some reason I want to keep this as a 6 volt original.
