8N governer. What does it do and how does it do it?

I posted this before and it kind of fell off. I am kind of hoping someone can explane. What does it do and how does it do it?

68_f100,The governor is to keep the engines RPMs at a desired RPM setting.With a load on the engine or with no load on the engine the RPMs should remain about the same.

It's covered in the I&T FO4 manual. Are you looking for more detail than what is in paragraph 57 or a clarification of something? Or, just a general description?

basically it's centrifugal force acting upon the flyballs inside the governor housing. As you increase the throttle it allows the diameter of the circle the flyballs travel to increase. If you ever take yours apart, you will see how it works and understand. The FO-4 may help some too with its illustrations.

It uses fly balls and spring tension that keep the RPMs constant.

When you send the throttle command to the engine, you are sending it to the governor and not the carburetor (that's the governors job). The governor is set with a predetermined maximum RPM. As you are driving the tractor with the throttle set at a certain RPM, should the tractor encounter a heavier load (start going uphill or hit some thick grass with the mower), the governor will respond by increasing the throttle open signal to the carburetor. Then when the extra demand is no longer needed and the RPMs start going up, the governor will descrease the throttle command to the carburetor.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I understand it now. They sure did put alot of though into these old tractors.
