1948 8N Front mount dist.-6 volt. I need to replace the gasket on the governer housing,is the anything special i need to know before unbolting the housing to replace the gasket?Do i have to take the linkage loose to replace the gasket?

Eric L,IF its just leaking at the gasket and not the shaft seal to.Take the governor off, disconnect the linkages then scrape off the old gasket, take the screw out and remove the internals from the housing. With a flat steel plate or glass put a piece of sandpaper say 180 grit and hone the housing on it to flatten and true it up as most of them are warped from over tightening then to stop leaks over the years.Once you have it flat again clean up the inside and lube the back bearing with a little grease.Put the internals back in ,clean off the old gasket from the front cover and install new gasket with permatex or gray silicone.VERY IMPORTANT! SHORT BOLT IN THE TOP HOLE!!!

Im not sure if it is leaking from the shaft seal or the housing gasket. There is oil on the iside of the housing closet to the motor.
