Compression and combustion gasses in the radiator (test kits are cheap for that)
Overheating and blowing coolant out the overflow
Coolant in the oil (detected by waiting a day and loosening the drain plug to the point it is about to come out looking for "green" instead of oil. Also the oil looking milky or chocolaty.
Leakage to the outside of the engine along the head to block parting line
White looking exhaust smelling of antifreeze
Compression loss in adjacent cylinders
Compression loss in single cylinders with coolant loss
Failure of pressure testing the system using pressurization tools (does not work with non pressure systems)

While these can also be caused by other factors, the head gasket is often the reason for the failure. Jim

Hello RL 539, welcome to YT! White smoke/steam from the exhaust due to coolant getting into cylinders. If you have antifreeze in the cooling system it can emit a sort of sweet to sour smell in the exhaust. Jim’s description of “Compression loss to adjacent cylinder” would simply mean the gasket failed between two cylinders. This failure does not always have coolant loss associated with it. A compression test with two cylinders next to each other showing the same low or no compression would nearly be a 100 percent diagnosis for this. Also, this would cause the engine to run quite rough or uneven.

Suggest getting or borrowed blocks tester .

Hi Janichoison, I've check compression 105 on #1 100 on 2,3 and 4 all seem good/ still unable to start. I'm 90 yrs old and new it this. Thanks
