8n HOLE IN CASE

Hey guys, I've spent a good long while searching for this topic and either I am bad at searching or it just ain't there.

I was power washing my early 50 8N today and realized there is a hole in the top radius of the case, just aft the engine and behind the air filter. I poked a wire down it to see if I found oil or water or something. Pulled out a dry wire, although I am not sure that I was able to place the wire in the right spots. Does anyone know about this hole and what it is for? Is it ok for water to get in it? Can't even find in the the FO-4.
Thanks,
Gary

Case? Do you mean the bell housing? Or the block?

Front or side distributor?

If it's a side distributor, it's probably the timing hole. Should be covered. W/ a metal lid. Can you see the flywheel & ring gear in it?

If i m thinking right thats where your flywheel is no harm done it may be like that for many years before it bothers you again

Sounds like it could be the hole for a Sherman step-up shifter cable that's no longer there. It would be about 7/16" or 1/2" diameter hole.

In the blurry pic (sorry), you can see the hole in a whitish kinda of square (old duct tape previous owner had on). In the other pic you can see just the right edge of the old tape. I washed with a steam cleaner today.

Thanks for the help guys.

Without measuring - I'd say it is about that size. I am not sure if this tractor ever had a Sherman step up - are these holes customary or only on tractors with the step up?

You're welcome. Glad to help

Yea, I see from the pic it's the transmission case. And, like John Smith said, probably from a Sherman shifter cable.

I'd cover it w/ some light gauge metal held in place w/ JB weld. You don't need water in the transmission.

Check the fluid; if it's milky, it's waterlogged.

I don't think too much water got in, but I guess to be safe I should loosen the drain plug and see what comes out. Thanks Bruce.

The hole would have been drilled by the owner/dealer when the Sherman was installed. Any water that gets in there will run right back out the bottom cotter pin hole. Nothing to worry about. It won't get into the transmission oil.

That is what it looks like to me, but I wanted to make sure as our temps are already dipping below zip. Thanks for the assurance!

No need, my bad. There is nothing in there; John Smith was right (as usual!). The hole isn't in the transmission case as I first thought. It's under the steering box. The only thing in there is the main shaft.....or a Sherman w/o a cable!

did you check with a flashlite to see if that sherman is still in there, maybe the cable broke and p.o. just never fixed it

Garmo.......as you should know, Shermans were DEALER installed, so the hole is NOT FACTORY. Me? I'd brouse the electrical hardware store for a springy finger metal plug to fill the hole. Electricians use them all the time to meet "code" for switch boxes, etc. .......Dell

Good thought - I will try to check it out this weekend. If by chance it is there I will post my good fortune.

Thanks.
Gary

Why is the exhaust going backwards/towards the front? If it's vertical I didn't think the 90 was that long.
