DOES THE HOOD ON A 8N TRACTOR TILT FORWARD OR DO YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE HOOD TO WORK ON IT.IF IT TILTS WHAT BOLTS NEED TO BE REMOVED
 
It does not tilt> Hood has to be removed, gas tank is part of the hood. drain it first and it will be lighter.
 
Hi, no Ford didn't design them to tilt . Ferguson made his T-O models to tilt .But an 8n can be made too tilt . Check out Marv Bauhmans website .HTH ! God bless
 
as the others said.. 8n hood don't tilt.. would shave off rad neck and maybee crumple tank top.

2 dogleg bolts and the ? 4 hood bolts, plus fuel line.. and any wires for lamps..

First, please turn off the cap locks. It's hard to read on these old eyes!

After you get the 4 bolts off of the dash, remove the wire going to the head lights. Then, w/ the gas off, unscrew the fuel line at the carb. If the tank is full, you should drain the gas out. Then, get a couple of saw horses to put the hood on when you get it off. Remove the two bolts at the bottom of the dog legs. The grill is held in place by to hinges at the top & the dog legs at the bottom. After the dog leg bolts are out, the grill will fall out.....usually on your foot. Pull the hood forward about an inch, then up to clear the radiator neck. It should be easy after that. A helper makes it much easier.

I think someone forgot to tell this guy,,,are he does not read the Internet :lol: I worked on this tractor after he did and their were no modifications made,,, I spec he may have loosen the top rad hose at the head maybe,,, dunno but here's proof

My 9n has 5 bolts on each dog-leg so it is kinda a job to remove the hood,so I replaced everything that needed to be replaced[I hope] when I had it apart last.---lha
 
i recently bought the tractor and it does need some work.everything looks easy to do if the hood is off.voltage regulator,belt,generator.
 
No need to remove the hood for any of that work. You can rewire the entire tractor w/ the hood on; removing the air filter & tool box does make it easier.

I asked because some folks think you need to remove the hood/radiator to change the points.

The front distributor was designed to come off of the tractor to replace/adjust the points. Remove the wire on the coil, remove the coil bail, remove the distributor cap & take the two bolts off. The base of the distributor has an offset tang & can only go back one way unless you really force it on.

Have you confirmed that the v/r & generator are both bad? It's usually one or the other, rarely both.

i dont know if the regulator or generator is bad
but i put a new 6 volt battery and cables on it.i
made it positive ground but couldn't get a spark
when i tried to polarize tne generator.i checked the voltage at the battery when the tractor was running and it is only 6 volts.it was previously wired negitive ground.also it has a side mount disributor.do you know if the point gap is 15 or 20.what should i gap the plugs to?
 
You asked the point/plug gap question yesterday & I answered it. Didn't my response post?

If you tried to polarize it w/ the tractor running, chances are very good you fried the v/r. Check out tip # 23 for info on correctly polarizing it.

When it's running, you should have about 7.35v for it to charge. The flowchart will help you see if it's the v/r or generator.

i appriciate the troubleshooting guide for the charging system but it came thru blurry and i cant read it.is there a website i can get it from or can you please resend it.also the point and plug gap info never posted
