8N Hydraulic Lift and Play in Steering

Using a 8n with mower on 3 point hitch, mower will lift up but at times will not lower, no frequency to problem, it should be noted that this tractor was left outside and water did get into transmision, I have changed the trans fluid 2 times already, any suggestions?
Also, the steering has lots of play turning left to right before wheels actually turn, is steering gear worn or can free play be adjusted out of the steering?

If you have any trash in the sump.. it can block the exhaust valve, or grit can stick the control valve... next time it sticks up, pull the inspection port and make sure the control arm is actually moving the valve.. if it is, and arms won't drop.. you can pull the pressure port plug and they will drop like a rock.

Some have reported luck in blowing debri out of an exhaust valve that ain't badly plugged, by taking the lift arms that are stuck partially up, and lifting them al the way up, and then slamming down under arm pressure a few times.

Real deal will be cleaning the dump if it is grit or trash in the oil..

forgot to mention steering.

If you can turn the steering wheel and it rises or falls ( screws in and out of steering tube ).. top or top and bottom thrust bearing are gone. If no unscrewding, and you turn the wheel and it takes a bit for the steering arms to move.. then use.. sector backlash is out.. or bushings are going.. or both.. sometimes you get a sector gear shaft moving fore or aft right before it turns.. thus meaning bushing are worn. Tie rod ends and draglinks can wear as well.

Old boxes adjust sector back lash by removing the bolts onthe round covers and rotating the eccentric holed' covers to find a tighter fit, IF possibel. then put screws back in. New boax has sector adjsutment studs.. just back off retainer nut.. then use large flat blade screwdriver to adjust..

Thanks for the reply, I will try both remadies and see what happens, how hard is it to take apart the steering gear to replace parts if adjustment is not woking?

I've not had an old style box apart.. but have had a few late boxes apart.. wasn't any more difficult than any other repair that involves grease and and a little cussing and stuck parts...
