8N hydrolic pump

I have mild drift down. So I was thinking of going after the piston. I have a few questions.

1) 8N JIG AND BOOKLET FOR ADJUSTING THE 8N LIFT
Is this a must for the job?

2) I am thinking a NNA piston, and rings? Any reason not to?

3) How often is the piston sleeve to bad to be homed out? Should I mail order a new sleeve with the new piston and rings.

4) Is a whole pump rebuild a must?

5) If no on the pump rebuild. I assume it is best to pull it and clean off the gunk? If so should I replace an parts just cuz? Relief valve?

Thoughts?

And how long does it take for two people to do the job.
1) Just the piston sway
2) Drop and clean the pump
3) Total rebuild?

1) If the lift is working OK other then drift down, I see no reason to buy the jig and adjust.
2) NAA piston and rings are a very good idea and worth the expense.
3) You can not tell for sure about the piston sleeve until you remove it. You should not hone it very much because the tolerances are very tight for good operation.
4) In my opinion clean the pump but do not rebuild unless absolutely necessary. New rebuild parts quality are suspect. You could end up with a bigger problem then you started with.
5) Replacing the relief valve is a good idea. Also the cam follower pin if it is worn.
I am old, slow and never rush and do not have a helper. I recently removed the pump and top cover and cleaned out my 1950 8N. It took me two days working about 3-4 hours a day. I have an engine hoist that I used to remove and replace the top cover. The pump is a little heavy but not that difficult for one person. Take your time and clean the sump, pump and cover good using diesel fuel or other cleaner. It ,most likely will be the only time in your life it will need to be done to that tractor.

Leakdown is typically a worn and leaking lift cylinder. I'm of the mindset that honing is a half measure at best - $125 will replace the whole thing with a new NAA style cylinder, piston, and seals. Unless you are really strapped for cash the $90 extra seems like money well spent to me. Unless you have other problems I'd stop right there - clean out the crud while the top is off and fill with fresh fluid.

It is odd as it varies on what position the transmission splitter is in. When the tranny is in normal range, and the lift has the disk at the highest position, and I shut off the engine under 3 minutes.

That is what I am thinking of... But don't I have to adjust the linkage to put her back together?

I'm sorry - didn't mean to preclude that - I was refering to the pump end. New cam follower and adjustment is certainly worth doing while the top is off.

So new sleeve, piston NNA, and nna rings. Zang jig and instructions.
New oil 5 gal
and what like 2 gaskets? One under the cylinder sleeve? and one to hold the lid on?

Anything else to have on hand Before I start?

And good source for the parts?
