8N ignition coil

I'm working on a friends Late 8N with distributer on the side
I cant get it to fire. I tested the coil and it was bad. Installed a new coil wires points condenser and have a spark but its week. I tried putting a jumper direct from battery to coil and still the same, the coil said without external resistor. do I need a coil with external resistor?
I'm getting gas and tried ether and still no luck.
Help
Thanks

Hi- Im not a 2N mechanic- but- replace the coil with the same coil that was on it; also- if it has an "external resistor" then
the coil does NOT need to have one; otherwise it does need one.

Two questions/comments...

1. Is the tractor "as built", with a 6 Volt (+) ground electrical system or has it been converted to 12 Volt (typically) (-) ground?

2. I've never seen a coil marked "without external resistor".

" I tested the coil and it was bad."

How did you test it?

" do I need a coil with external resistor?"

No. You have a weak spark. Why would you want to increase the resistance in the ignition circuit?

The number 1 cause of a weak spark is a weak battery. Put it on a charger, then check it per tip # 49.

6v or 12v? If it's 12v, the coil should have 3.25 ohms of internal resistance or more. 6v, 2.5 ohms or less.

" Im not a 2N mechanic"

He does not have a 2N. He has an 8N with a side distributor which uses an entirely different coil than a 2N.

" if it has an "external resistor" then the coil does NOT need to have one; otherwise it does need one. "

Wouldn't it be wise to just measure the internal resistance of the coil to determine if it needs an external resistor or not?

It is a 6 v system. Im asking the ? about the resister only because this is what it said on the box for the coil. It said the coil is for without an external resistor meaning the coil is internally resisted.
One thing is saw in the tips was the need for copper core plug wires. the set a got at T S are the graphite core. ill change that.
I have 2 6 votl batteries connected in parallel for cranking better.
I noticed a voltage drop on the wire going to the coil down to 4.5 this is why it put the jumper in from bat. to coil is this normal.
When I tested the old coil it was 1.1 ohm on the primary and 4-5 on the secondary.

(quoted from post at 19:05:20 02/27/18) You should have 6.5 volts at the coil for sure.
ou are not going to have 6.5v during cranking, as the couple of hundred amps starter draw will both pull the battery down some plus the voltage drop in the cables. 4.5 seems low however.

Where and how are you testing for spark?
Voltage on the coil should be battery voltage both sides with the
points open. Battery voltage battery side, zero on the other with
the points closed. That would at least tell you the points were
closing and making a good contact. Did you burnish/clean them
when you installed them? Gap set at 25 thousandths?

my batteries are up to charge and have the correct voltage at the coil. Im hoping its the new plug wires that are the cause and ill try that tomorrow.
thanks for all the help.

I just tried starting my 2N after a rebuild. New points condenser, rotor etc. All from TSC. Weak spark wouldn't fire. Put in
my old parts and it fired right up. Should have listened to all the posts about TSC junk.

?coil said without external resistor? ?It is a 6 v system. ?

Assuming that means the coil is ?12 volt, no external resistor required?. If so, you have a direct 12 volt coil on a 6 volt system. A direct 12 volt coil (no resistor required) has about 3 ohms across + and ? terminals, a 6 volt or ?12 volt external resistor required? should have about 1 1/2 ohms.

Get a coil marked ?6 volt? or ?12 volt ? use with external resistor, or external resistor required? but do not use a resistor with it. NAPA IC7SB or equivalent coil

Doesn't matter where they are made. A US company sold them. And will continue to sell them until they start losing money, then they will go to another supplier to get their junk parts.

If the US companies actually performed any kind of quality control, they would never sell this crap.

They can buy 100 widgets for $1 each & a 10% defect rate...........or, 100 widgets for $1.50 each w/ 1% defect rate. What you are buying at TSC is the 10% defect rate product.
