8N King Pin

So I'm rebuilding the engine in my '52 8N, and I'm about to put hte front axle assembly back on. I notice that there is some movement at the kingpin.

What I'm hoping to find out is a check to see if the king pin needs to be replaced now while I have the axle off the tractor. I know they can be a pain to replace, so I want to check it before I go to the trouble of replacing it.

The tractor has never had a loader on it, and I didn't notice any issues before the teardown if that makes a difference (but then again I'm not sure what I'd notice if the kingpin was bad)

from what i have read. your king pin is bad if you keep breaking the distr cap. i will be replacing mine, as i have replaced 4 caps in the last yr.

The pin is really bad if the axle breaks the frontmount dist. cap.A good check would be done with a caliper or dividers. Just measure top to bottom from the front,middle,and near the block to get the amount of wear.Most of the wear will be on the bottom of the pin,since it bears the weight of the tractor.I think unless it's perfect,I'd replace it and the bushing while the front is off.---lha

There should be no movement between the pin and the bore in the axle support. The axle bushing to pin fit is rather loose - .015+ new so there will be some movement there. If there is any visible sign of wear on the pin replace it - new bushing and pin is a $25 item.

If it has a steal bushing I have seen very few steal bushings that were worn out,,, You can look at the bushing and pin for ware,,, they are on the sloppy side even new...
