8n live pto

Someone at an old farm fest told me there is a way to make the pto live on an 8n, does anyone know where I could get a kit to do this?

Sherman once made a traction clutch to enable stopping the tractor without using the foot clutch, which stops the PTO as well. The effect is much like that of the hand clutch on an AC WD.

They have been out of production for 50 years or more and have become rather rare.

I suspect he meant live hydraulics not live PTO. A live PTO keeps spinning when you push the clutch in to stop the tractor - real hard to do on an N-series. Because the hydraulic pump on the N-series is also driven by the PTO depressing the clutch also stops the pump and the 3pt won't lift. That can be overcome using an external pump powered directly off the engine. Here is my version:

some jokers also tell guys that an over-running coupler is like live pto. course those are sheisters trying to sell tractors usually.. :)

ditto what dan and toh said.

yes there was a hand clutch live pto option availoable.. might as well try finding hens teeth first. and you could go to live hyds via a 2nd pump .. etc.

Yes....there was a Sherman manually operated LPTO made for the 8n.It was just a clutch pack installed between the tranny output shaft and pinion.By engaging...the tractor would stop and the pto kept spinning. They are fairly rare and if you find one, the cost would be around 800-1000.We have one installed on a 52 8n here at nnalert. don b

I have seen one of the sherman units.
It is a small clutch pack between the transmition and the rear dif. when you the leaver it disengages the tranny from the rear wheels. The result is the hyd. and the PTO are still spinning but the tractor stops.

Wish I had one for my 51 8N

yep.. should be a pinion clutch in place of the hollow splined tube.. a naa kit that uses hyds driven off a pump on the nose of the engine hyd pump was available too.. and they are rare as well.

Sounder....yes that type was a little later version available on the 53 as an accessory.Like you say....had a little aux. pump added to the regular vane pump.We also have one like this added to a 53 we have in our showroom. don b

I've also seen 2 other types of manual conversion done to an 8n. One had an aluminum tak on it.. and was essentially the same deal.. a hand actuated pinion cliutch.. looke dlike a vintage machine shop job. the other was axtually an axle clutch.. again.. smae principle.. let something slip and nothing moves.. but IMHO..t he axle clutch was not the best idea.. they had to do lots of custom trumpet work.. etc.

neat nonetheless.
