8N lost spark.

Working on an 8N. That just quit running. Front distributor. Owner says it was running fine. Backfired and quit. I have replaced the points and condensor,plugs and cap. Old cap had the center contact missing. Where it touches the rotor. Have power into coil. But no spark,coil does have a crack on one side.

I have tried to measure coil. But the readings keep changing. Thinking coil is bad. Do they have a high failure rate.Any tips on getting it going. Seems like a very simple system.

I see you are a Expert, even the best need help form time to time. Every thing you say tells me to go for the kill and replace the coil. The crack is a confirmed KILL whither its a fix are not.

I don't see how it can be worked around go for a confirmed kill.
The other issue you face is what killed it.

Old cap had the center contact missing. Where it touches the rotor.

Its possible it over worked the coil it keep it maxed out.

If the coil is crscked it has been overheated and has shorted turns.Should have been the first part to change.I could never afford to change the entire ignition because spark is lost.You may have gotten a new part that is NG.In any case ignition repair is a step by step process.

Thanks guys. I am no expert,but I have done a lot of tune ups in 53 years.But none as bad as this one. Points are burned,condenser puffed up,coil cracked.Rotor contact missing on cap.36 I was thinking the same thing about the coil. Overheated and burned.

This tractors system is not the origanil system. Has been rewired.I believe the problem is. The key was left on and burned out the system. Thinking about installing a oil pressure switch. To cut power to the switch. In case the key is turned on for some reason. While tractor is not running. Grandkids love to play on tractors.

If you have a old tar filled coil laying around convert it to a round can coil are.

I guess you could get a murphy switch gauge....
