I have 1947 8N converted to 12 volt.
between the coil and right above the distributor there is a black box which I am being told is a Magneto that needs to be replaced.
I can not find this part to order, is this something that is only available in a conversion kit, or is it called something else that I can
order.
please help

Does your tractor have a round can like coil on it? If so, what you are describing is the shell of the OEM coil. Was the tractor running and now isn't? A little background will help.

I think you are referring to the square coil that sits on top of the front mount distributor. Go to any online tractor parts site. Do a search for " Ford front mount coil" I think you will find your "black box"

No magneto - you have a front mounted distributor. Someone has gutted the OEM square coil and wired a round coil into it.

A good cleaning would help, electricity don't like dirty parts.
If you are getting a spark out of coil, replacing it will not change anything. look at rotor in distributor. Also if you are getting a spark out of the coil the points are doing there job!

Agreed with the others -you don't have a magneto, you have the front mount distributor. I can rebuild yours or exchange as I'm sitting on three OEM rebuilds now all set to go. My Email open. Decide which electrical system you wish to use. Invest in the Essential Manuals while you wait.

"Yes has a round cylinder coil Engine turns over spark leavening coil but no spark at distributor" From that, it sounds like your coil wire went open. How are you testing the "no spark at distributor"?
