WHERE DOES THE FLAT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE BOLT TO ON A 52 8N?THE CABLE I TOOK OFF IS NOT THE ORIGINAL.I BOUGHT THE ORIGINAL FROM CARPENTERS AND IT IS TOO SHORT TO REACH THE SPOT THE OLD ONE WAS BOLTED.

bolt ahead of steering box arms that attaches dash structure/brace to casting.

Actually, you said "flat negative cable". A bit confusing, because these tractors were positive ground, so that would be the flat braided cable from battery POSITIVE terminal to the tractor chassis ground.

Fran......the original 7-in flatbraid ground was bolted to the RUSTY sheetmetal battery attach bolt. It is a LOUSY GROUND. I recommend using the LONGER 11-in flatbraid strap grounding it direct to one of the steering gearbox castiron attach bolts. (it'll reach)

While the 6-volt N-tractor came from the factory, "positive ground", many have been converted to 12-volt negative ground. Surprizingly enuff, the electrons don't care positive or negative ground, but you care. 12v alternators DEMAND negative ground ...or... you will let the smoke out.

6-volt gennys can be positive or negative ground as long as the squarecan voltage regulator is correctly polarized. Iff'n incorrectly polarize, it will NOT charge yer battery. Iff'n yer not certain, ASK and we will walk you thru the "polarization" procedure. Remember, you can polarize as many times as it takes to feel warm and fuzzy ...er... charged ......Dell

I WOULD APPRICIATE YOU EXPLAINING THE POLARIZATION.ALSO WITH THE LONGER GROUND CABLE WILL THE BATTERY COVER FIT?IF NOT WHAT CAN I HOLD THE BATTERY DOWN WITH?

Fran.......dunno about how the longer flatbraid ground will effect yer battery cover as I have a latter open-frame battery hold-down scheme. I routed my LONGER flatbraid over the back of the battery tray down to the front steering gearbox bolt. Ain't no law sez you can't "modify" yer battery cover so you can use my recommended castiron GROUND scheme. Simple, eh?

To "polarize" yer 8N's 6-volt squarecan voltage regulator, ARC-SPARK yer side-by-side BAT & ARM terminal together, engine OFF. I use a wideblade stubby screwdriver. You can use barb'd warr iff'n you want. Simple, eh?

As I said, you can "polarize" as many times as it take to feel warm and fuzzy ...er... charged. ......Dell

Fran.....sometimes Dell forgets.I think he is getting old.
He says....6-volt gennys can be positive or negative ground as long as the squarecan voltage regulator is correctly polarized.
I say....generators are polarized, not voltage regulators.However....generators can be polarized at the tabs connected to the regulator from the generator.
He also says.....the original 7-in flatbraid ground was bolted to the RUSTY sheetmetal battery attach bolt. It is a LOUSY GROUND.
I say.... the original ground strap for the 52 8n was 10" long and was attached as JMOR says.
I don't know which strap you got ,but the "11" strap works great with the original 8n5162 battery cover/hold-down.Remember....the 6v battery should be orientated so that the positive post is the closest to the dash. don b

don, jmor says the flat cable is the positive cable and goes to ground.if this is true and i bolt the black cable to the negitive side it wont reach the starter relay.mynegative battery post faces the air carb side of the tractor.

Sounds like your present battery doesn't have the same post configuration as the original Ford tractor battery .

Fran....like I said.....orientate your battery so that the positive post is closest to the dash or air cleaner [180 degrees] from what you say you have. don b1

(quoted from post at 13:40:26 04/22/10) JMOR.......none of those battery configurations will work on the tractor,if wired up original. don b1
Don, I didn't know that they would.....I was just trying to raise the flag that perhaps his problem was his battery terminal configuration, and if so, I bet you can tell him what he needs. I couldn't determine what batt config he has now.

Is this right, Don?

Thanks JMOR the picture told the story.I bought the tractor with a battery that has posts accross from each other.I need a battery with
diaginal posts.Many thanks,Fran
