8N overcharging

I reposted this to get additional help!

8N, 1947 early model, front mounted distributor, 6 volt positive ground system.

Okay! Here is what I did today. Cleaned all ground connections and bypassed three wires from generator to voltage regulator by making up three new wires. No change. Removed the field wire off the generator and no change. Pulled battery, voltage regulator, and generator.

Talked with Ford dealership shop personnel. They are stumped.

Had all three tested. There are no bad cells, voltage regulator tested okay, generator outputting between 5 and 10 amps, voltage out of generate is 6 to 8 volts.

Reinstalled everything. Battery was at 6.2 with engine off. Polarized the generator. With engine running I am reading anywhere from 7 to 8 volts constantly going to the battery

Any suggestions?

Maybe missed something on the earlier thread, but everything you noted on this one seems normal. A battery needs a higher voltage to restore the intended electron balance (read it as the specific gravity on a battery tester). So a 12v charges at 13 to 14.5, depending on the temperature; and a 6 volt charging at 7 or so is just fine. Get to work using the tractor !!!

6.2 volts across battery terminal when not running is good. 7.4 volts across battery terminal when running means the genny is charging the battery. Seems OK to me. Maybe your amp meter is not working or not wired correctly.

Unless you are absolutely sure that the battery cables do not have any corrosion between the cable strands and the terminals where the fit together, it may be worth it to replace them. Do it one at a time, ground cable first, and test voltage after each change.

Charging systems are very sensitive to electrical resistance caused by corrosion.
