I am installing new points in my 48 8N, ft distributor. I can not get them to open more than .005. They are new points from our host, good quality I think. The bushings are nice and tight, no play. The ones that I took out were also too tight and I thought that the rubbing block must have been worn, but now the same problem.

I have encountered several sets of new points where the rubbing block was too short to open them far enough. Where did you get the points?

He said he got them from our Hosts!

A local repair shop has encountered the same problem with new points. He has devised a method that he
"bends" the arm slightly to get the needed gap. I have not seen him do it but the mechanic told a friend
of mine that he did that. Your results may vary.

I believe this sight sells 2 different kits one claims to have Blue streak points and is more expensive. which ones did you buy? That said the last time I bought the more expensive set claiming Blue streak points I had the same problem. I went back to my stash of old points that I don't toss out and was able to get .040 gap. Now I have to ask is there some mark of Identification on actual Bluestreak points because I wondered if the set I received actually had a set of points other than Blue streak by mistake. I don't even remember if the package I received claimed Blue streak. The next time I do points I will go to Napa.

lot the mounting holes with small round file.

Info from the Standard Motor Products calendar on Blue streak points for 8N front mount distributor (9N12107 points). From my experience with Standard/Blue Streak points for other engines, the colors and copper will be as their catalog photos show.

If you care to do some in-depth reading (aka, TMI) about last year this time, Jesse Morris & I, w/ input from others here, spent some time trying to resolve this problem.

75 Tips

Go to your local NAPA outlet and ask for p/n FD-6769X POINTS -that is the Blue Streak number OR, ask for the p/n CS-35 as that is their ECHLIN brand points. Either one will be the best and cheapest choice. All the parts for the front mount distributor are USA made except the Echlin points -those are made in Mexico -still beats Cheena like all the others. Yes there were some issues last year with bad lots -see BRUCE(VA)'s post. You can get USA Mad quality parts at NAPA:

Is the rubbing block plastic or fiber? If plastic they are junk/cheap, I toss them out. Fiber is probably made by Standard Ignition, they make the Blue Streak and Echlin parts. I always go with Blue Steak because I don't like junk parts and doing the same job twice.

Tom,

I made a [b:f06e948b45]YouTube[/b:f06e948b45] video to show how to modify the points like JMOR said.
