8N Power Loss

Okay......As suggested, I have changed the spark plugs and it is running worse now than it was before. I have sprayed out the carb with cleaner and it is getting good flow. The points and condenser are new and clean. The points are gapped to the recommended. .025.

It goes down the hill fine but when I get to the bottom and turn to come back up, it almost completely dies. Then it seems to come back and about half way up it almost dies again and runs extremely rough in the process.

I did notice that you can twist the rotor button some and there seems to be wear on the tabs in the distributor cap and the button is scored. The button clip seems loose as well. Could this be the issue?

Yes.

First, check the shaft for movement. You might need a new bushing.

Replace the cap & rotor w/ quality parts, both from the same source. NAPA, nnalert's or here at YT.

The distributor cap and rotor where put on in March and the parts came from here.

Bruce,

what sort of play am I looking for? I know up and down, which it doesn't have. Side to side has no play either. The only play I feel is rotational play.

Oh!!! Does NAPA usually keep parts for the Ns in stock???
Thanks!

If it doesn't have any side play, it's ok.

All NAPA's are different. some stock N parts. some don't.

Make sure you are putting it all back together correctly.

Okay. I checked that. The cap is seated correctly and the button in pushed all they way down. The post labeled "1" is in the correct place. Everything looks like it is together good. Should I try replacing the clip then?

In addition to shat Bruce suggested, I would
disconnect each spark plug wire - one at a time -
while it is running to make sure it is firing on all
cylinders. Each time you disconnect a wire, the rpms
should drop about the same amount.

Does it miss when starting up the hill?

How old are the spark plug wires? If not relatively recent, look at them at night with the engine running, preferably in high humidity.

VERIFY that ALL plug wires and the coil wire (both ends) are fully seated into their respective towers.

Just a thought, but if it runs good without a load and then tries to die under load you might want to turn your main mix out (rich) a half turn or so and see if that helps the problem.

See if it will climb the hill in a lower gear and a higher RPM. If it gets better, I would start thinking secondary ignition. Dean suggested wires which are not uncommon. They can fail externally (short to ground) or internally (too much resistance).

The only thing that is not new are the wires. Before I changed the plugs if I dropped to a lower gear and pushed to a higher RPM it did fine.

I am really interested in this thread because my 9N is acting the same way
