broketractor

New User
i have a ford 8n tractor. been in my family my whole life. a couple years ago when started it would only race at a high rpm. you could not slow it down. now it has been setting for a couple years without being used. was told problem was probably the gov. does this sound right? where should i go from here? is there a place most buy parts on internet? how do you tell what year it is?

Let me get this straight,
You have a tractor that's been in your family it's whole life, served your family well, there's obviously nothing seriously wrong with it and it just sat there for 2 years.
It's Sunday so I have to be nice!(Kind of!)This is just my honest advice, nothing personal:
You sir and your family need to sell or donate this tractor immediately to someone who has the heart and passion to use/restore it!

well thanks for your opion. i did say it has been in the family my whole life, not its. just looking for some answers on problem.

That does sound like a governor problem. First,
check to make sure the linkage is connected at both
ends. If it is, your governor may need to be
rebuilt. This site sells most parts you could need
for your tractor, at competitive prices, with good
service. Other places to look for parts are your
local New Holland dealer and ebay.

Too bad you couldn't post something relevent to the problem. I suppose you would be the first in line to accept the "donation".

Consider posting this on the 8N board. You will be surprised how many responses that you get.

I would first check the linkages to make sure they aren't sticking the throttle open.

check governor linkage.. make sure a sticj hasn't jambed them.. past that.. disconenct the carb to gov linkage and see what you have.. if gov is constantly pulling.. it's gov issue

thanks for the replys. the linkages are hooked up and free moving. will try the disconnecting thing.

First off I want to apologize to you for yesterday.Telling you that you should get rid of your tractor.I still can't stand someone just letting a beautiful tractor rot in there barn. You're obviously younger than I thought and your trying to fix the tractor so your part of the answer not part of the problem,so I am sorry!
I also want to thank RickB for pointing out my indiscretions.Rick,I read your posts' a lot and obviously your one of the most knowledgable advisors' on this forum.I value your opinion and will strive to do better in the future.
I love Ford tractors and I love this website (most of all the knowledge you can get from listening to the experts on this forum).I've got two tractors of my own, have my hands full with them, and I am certainly not looking for anyone to give me a tractor(unless someone has a restored diesel powermaster with Elenco 4wd they're giving away.(wink!
For what its worth I had a Cub Cadet Garden tractor once and the govenor spring became too weak to hold it against the idle adjustment screw and it would surge back and forth till I got a new spring.
Sincerely GT65

Replying to my own post. So,like some of the experts have said,I would think the linkage might have come apart somewhere! GT65

Apology accepted, I'm sure. We all get a little out of line here once In a while. I've been here long enough to be called on the carpet by quite a few of the fasthful, and deservedly so, truth be told.

I see nobody addressed your last two questions. This site has parts, ebay or just "google" what your LOOKING FOR!
oldfordtractors.com the John Smith site has a wealth of info on ford tractors including how to find your serial # and finding out what year it was made.
