Been looking at this machine since winter. Today it taggled along home with me. Appears to be a late 8N with a magneto. Has a Howard gear box in it. Previous owner said it "ran when parked and the Howard box worked" has home built box under trans and rear end full of lead slugs.

now I have to make room for it. First thing the wife said was "where are going to put it"?

Figured it was worth the 450 dollars I paid for it!

i dont who or why the logic behind the mag but its not only one i seem. u gotta good prodject. must of pulled a tiller with the howard installed??

I hope the howard is in usable conditon, but may have to rebuild it. I understand the mag was a option on the 8Ns. need to find out more. the front cover is different than the front mount or the side mount dist.

Ok, thanks, what I have is the WICO so may not be orginial. trying to find out everything I can about it.

while the original magnetos were fairbanks morse, either j4b,s(early) or x type,(later) theres no reason that a wico wouldnt work providing that the magneto base will couple to the top of your existing drive and its a clockwise rotation magneto. the magnetos themselves are available many of the j4b,s were used on allis-chalmers tractors, the hard part to find is the magneto adaptor that you already have.

The tractor ran with the wico x, so i am not worried about that. the mag is off the tractor but should be able to get it working. got a lot of work before I think about firing her up.

(quoted from post at 17:03:43 05/13/10) this is a picture of where the mag mounts

I stand corrected. The mags were used mainly during the war on 2Ns when electrical components were hard to get. I never new the 8Ns to come from the factory with a mag. I suspect it was installed by someone but I weren't around when those tractors were new so it would be interesting to find out.
