8n PTO Seal

My PTO seal is leaking. I have two questions:

1. Am I going to need to replace more than just the seal? What are the odds I'm going to need a new shaft, bearing, or other parts (and what other parts)? It would be really annoying to drain the fluid and pull the seal only to find I need more than a seal... (I know it's possible to pull the seal without draining fluid by parking nose down in a ditch, but I need to change the fluid anyway.)

2. If the odds support buying just the seal, is there a type of store that would carry the seal locally? Is this a common item that various industrial suppliers would have? Or is it specific to tractors? (If I have to buy a shaft and bearings, I'll order from a tractor supplier, but it would be a shame to pay $20 shipping for a $3 seal...)

Thanks,

-Paul

if you intend on pulling the bearing carrier to do the seal replacement the easy way, then at a minimum you will need the seal and a pto gasket.. which, I guess you could make with some thin gasket paper.

if for some reason you want a challange, you could try pulling the seal with the shaft assembly in place and fight a slip ring in a hard to get to location... and avoid replacing that small paper gasket.. your call.

as to other parts needed... the tractor is in front of you.. you tell us!

Is there side play on the shaft?

thrust play on the shaft?

does it engage and disengage like it should?

does it kick out under a load?

if no play nad doesn't kick out, and does engage and disengage like it should, you are looking at 5g oil, a paper gasket and a pto seal, mayybe depending on the wear ring if it is heavily grooved where the new pto seal lip rides.. if it is, you need a wear ring.

Well, actually, it's not. It's out at the cabin... I guess the replacement can wait until I check it for play next time I'm out there.

To answer the other questions, it engages and disengages as it should. I've never had it kick out on me, but the only load I've ever put on it is a brush hog.

Is what you're calling a wear ring the part that's listed as a "sleeve" on a parts website? (9N735B) The sleeve, bearing, and snap ring are all cheap, so I should just buy them, I think. It's only the shaft that's expensive (and not really that bad--until I add shipping).

Thanks,

i wouldn't buy anything till I checked it out.

if you have side play and thrust play and need a seal.. it's easier to just get the assembly.

if no side play or thrust play, I would not repalce the bearing.. just the seal/gasket, and wear sleeve if needed.

Okay, I'll wait. I guess there's no rush--unless there's a puddle under the tractor when I get out there. (When I pulled the PTO cover off to hook up the brush hog for the first mow of the year a couple weeks ago, there was some fluid in the cover.)

If there's play, I'll buy the assembly; if not, I won't. Either way, changing the fluid will wait until I have the parts. Another couple weeks won't make much difference.

Yup, if bearing good and no play and just a drip from a slightly worn seal, another week, month, or year won't matter much.

Most all I have done needed a sleeve 9N735B... It will be a challenge to replace it out in the middle of no-were.

If you get a replacement (1X3/8") shaft are already have a replacement shaft I think the bearing and ware sleeve are different and it will take a different Overrunning clutch.

Re-search it are maybe someone will fill in what I missed...

Don't know about a drip... Since I put the PTO cover on last fall, it accumulated an ounce or so of fluid in it. (I guess that could be a drip a day for six months, though...)

What tools will be needed? (I guess I need a peek at the shop manual before I head out there. And I better remember to bring it!) Can't easily bring the press, but I can bring an assortment of seal pullers and seal installing devices... Anything else? I have a full set of basic hand tools at the cabin, but the specialty stuff needs to come from home.

Pity they don't seem to sell 1-1/8" replacement shafts. If I need a new one, means I have to add another $50 for a new ORC.

Zero side to side play. There may have been a tiny (less than 0.002) bit of thrust play. I'm not going to replace the bearing at this time.
