I have an 8n and this spring I was looking into the PTO release lever stuck in the on possion and it will not move, last fall I split the tractor apart about 2" and got the lever to free up, but as soon as I pull the tractor back together the lever was stuck again, Any thoughts on what the problem is or where to start looking, I was hoping to be able use the PTO this winter.

As long as it is stuck in the on position, what is the problem?

If you are scared of it, put a cap over it and let it run....

If you don't want it running, turn the switch off...

Simple Eh?

(Dell is haunting me again)

pull the lever cover for a looksee.. might be a grunged up sliding coupler.. chewed up splined end.. etc.. could be caused by a sloppy pto bearing.

It has a cover on it now but I would like to use it in tha future, can I conect something to the pto and then start the tractor? that does not seem too safe, I would like to fix the lever, Just looking for some advice on what to look for. and how to go about it, Not coments on the obvious!

Thanks MG-8n

ven with the PTO lever engaged, the PTO shaft will not turn if you keep the clutch depressed. Look in your F)-4 manual to see the sliding coupler that connects the shaft coming out of transmission rear to the PTO shaft and the mechanism which slides that coupler when you move the PTO lever. Not a lot there...a lever, rod, fingers, coupler & as has been said, remove the round plate with PTO lever & take a look inside.

Short of 'fixing' whatever is wrong to keep it 'stuck'/engaged, just push the clutch pedal all they way down when starting and you shouldn't have any problems other than whatever you have plugged into the PTO always turning when you are moving (OR clutch pedal is up).

Thank you Jim That helps me out, I guess I just didn't know how it worked with the clutch, But that way I can use it, Thank you again.

You should ALWAYS turn the tractor off before attaching anything to the PTO. How could that possibly be unsafe? When you start the tractor up, have your foot on the clutch. The pto will not start spinning until you let the clutch pedal up.
