I was moving and the brush hog bogged down and the tractor died. It will not restart. I noticed the neg cable was an old car cable so I replaced it and the starter relay and still won't start. this is an 8n with front dist and 6 volts. Could it be the ingition switch. It is not getting spark. Pluggs look good and you can smell gas. Can you pull start these? any advice

Nathan; When she bogged down and quit, chances are the governor was in the "open/pull" position and she probably flooded, hence the "gas smell".
If you've got jumper cables, preferably to a twelve volt rig, try jump-starting it ...it will probably sputter and putt for a few minutes until she cleans out the excess gas, then she'll run OK, same as before !
Good luck..and yes you could pull her in high gear, but jumping is easier !

If you smell gas, chances are the plugs are fouled & it will be hard to start unless they dry off on there own or you take them out & wash them in dish soap. To check for spark, get an old plug, open the gap to 3/16, ground it to a rust & paint free spot on the head, turn the key on & crank the engine. You have three possibilities: no spark, weak and/or intermittent yellow spark, or a bright blue spark. What is it? Next, check for fuel. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the carb; as long as the fuel is turned on, you should see gas flowing out of the carb.

If you plan to jump it w/ a 12v battery, click on the link below & read tip # 43. If you hook it up wrong, you can burn up your points & coil or worse, blow up your 6v battery.
