8n radiator fan

using the old 8n this weekend and the radiator fan seems very lose i can move it up and down about an inch and a half it looks
like it is mounted on the water pump but i cant tell with out taking the hood off why would this be very lose

Your waterpump bearings are failing.

Next step is the fan taking a bite out of the radiator.

there are 4 small bolts that holds the fan blade on. using a very good socket that fits tight you can remove those bolts and the fan blade. then I suspect if you push up on where the fan blade was bolted on it will move up and down. should not move at all which will tell you the water pump is bad. can be done but easier with hood out of the way. you can call your parts place for a quote then check on this site for costs or ebay. water pumps aren't to expensive. post back for any questions. norm

When you get that cooling water pump out you can get a core exchange from the NAPA store. Many of them can be rebuilt. In my case the bushings were shot causing a bad leak as well as being very loose. Unbolt the fan before bring it in.

As the others said, this is what can happen.

As others have said, either the bearings in the water pump are bad or the fan is loose on the shaft. Regardless of the cause, do not start the tractor. That fan will launch right into the radiator. Pull the hood ( see tip # 12) and have the pump rebuilt. (don't buy a new one)

You might as well replace the hoses while you're in there. And make sure it has a t-stat . ( tip # 25)
