8N rear axle / seal replacement

The other day my axle nut came loose and the left wheel and hub fell off. I towed the tractor to the driveway and began evaluating. The right side nut was loose also. When I attempted to tighten it, it would skip threads. Either the axle or nut threads are stripped. I bought new nuts for both sides (havent put them on yet due to weather). I read smiths how to on axle seal replacement and will inspect the hubs for wear.

If I find that both axle end threads are too damaged, I will replace both axles with new ones. My question is.. I see the later model 8n's & NAA have an inner seal which mine probably doesnt.

Mine is a 48 serial 8N103589. Will a new axle purchased from nnalert, external_link work for my tractor? I read something about the newer axles not fitting tractors with older 8N axle / trumpet combinations.

Thanks for any help you may provide.. Ken

Yes it will work. It will have the machined surface for the inner seal but it will not have any effect on your application.

On your tractor it is not necessary to pull the axles out of the trumpet housings just to replace the seals. Leave the two top and bottom bolts in place that hold the bearing hub onto the trumpet housing and only take the four long bolts and the two short outer bolts out and pull the backing plate and seal retainer etc off leaving the axle bearing preload etc undisturbed. This is if the axles don't need to be replaced. If you do have to replace the axle be sure to replace the same amount of shims and gaskets that you take off so the bearing preload will be close to right the first time you check the preload. Too little preload on the bearings is lots better than too much preload. A worn old bearing will last a lot longer with little or no preload than one with too much preload.

You can mike the thread diameter on the portion where the nut sits and in another place where the nut has not sat and compare to know if the axle threads are usable or not.

Ken......they make 2-piece "squeeze'um" 8N axle nuts fer buggered axle threads $25 (cheap) Use 1-7/8 socket and torque to 450ft/lbs with 4-ft extension. Sorry, poor picture .......Dell
