8N Rear Hub

I have a leaking axle seal and am replacing it. My hub is tight, but has a wear ring against the seal. How much is tolerable, and is there such a thing as a sleeve for this? Also, do I have to remove the plate the seal rests in, or does it go in from the outside? I can"t really tell. Thanks

I'm not following your question.....but just about everything you need to know has been answered by John Smith:

I have a wear ring worn in my hub where the seal rides on it. How much wear do you guys think I can get away with? Its not much, but I can feel it with my fingers. The sleeve I'm talking about is a thin tin cylinder that taps on the surface to seal against the seal. I have seen these for harmonic balancers and didn't know if someone made one for an 8N hub. Thanks

Dean, mine is an early 1948 model. no inside seal. So, do you think my hub will seal with a slight wear groove, or should I get a new hub? Also, I went ahead and tore the whole thing down. Do the 4 through bolts come out to get out the seal retaining plate? They don"t seem to move. How do I get this plate off? My manual isn"t clear and I dont want to mess up my bolts by beating them out. Thanks for your help.

No way to know from available information.

Follow the instructions on John Smith's website to find out. I would not buy a new hub unless it will not tighten onto the tapered axle splines due to wear.

If it leaks, you can install sure seals.

If you need a different hub, John Smith may have a used one
for sale on his website also. If you post a picture of it, I'm sure
he could give you a recommendation on best course.
