8n rear trie

1951 8N side/m/ dis.. 12v con

I think my right rear tire 11.2 x 28 is shot
have a small 1/8 inch hole in side wall and i have a boot patch for that but when we took it off the rim is when i found that about a 3rd of the bead & side wall feels like the steel is broke and is all soft and easy to move. this tractor has been sitting on two flat back tires a long time. Am I looking at buying back tires??

Jeff........while there is no denying that yer tire is NOT 100%, and use the boot-patch. As long as yer innertube holds air (12psi) runner like you stoller or yer ag-bars are too smooth to make traction. .......Dell

Boot it up use dish soap on the beads and be careful airing it up and you should be good to go. I have tires that look a lot worse then that on on some of my machines. Shoot I was told some 15 plus years ago I needed to replace a couple tires on one machine and I told the guy I will when these no long hold air or hold the tubes in. There still holding just fine. I even have a pair of new tires sitting in the back of the shed waiting for the old ones to fall off. Oh by the way I have booted tires with a lot bigger hole then that one and they have worked just fine for many many years

I guess opinions are like belly buttons- everyone has one. But, if that were my tire, I wouldn't think twice of pitching it and replacing it with new. That one may work fine, but I would not be happy with it. And if the other side looked as bad or worse, I'd replace them both. Expect new tires would outlive both me and my tractor. Just the way I am. ';>)

the holes don't bother me.

it's the bead.

if the bead is seperated.. IMHO.. it's a dangerous tire. if the bead is not seperated.. I'd use it with a boot and tube, and just be carefull airing it up.

My 52 came to me with horrid tears in the side wall of one tire, I can see the tube filling the tear. Now I ask, what is a boot that you are talking about? Might it be a liner of some sort that may protect the exposed tube I see on my nightmare?

A boot is an extra large patch you glue to the in side of a tire. They come in all sorts of sizes. 4X4 up to well over 12X12 inches. They work well when you run a stub into a tire or you get a cut in that tire. There are not cheap I have seen them go for over $10 each

If you boot that bugger and put'er back together, when you air it up, do not stand close or lean over it as it lays on the ground. Use a lock on air chuck attached to one air hose, and then stand back and connect that air hose to another "live" air hose or the compressor itself. You can even use your air gauge by disconnecting the 2 hoses and putting the gauge on the male fitting going out to the tire.

I have used a lot of old tires, and have gotten the "very last mile" out of about a dozen, but I got fooled by one I was airing up. It looked like it had a few more years left in it, and it was just going on a flatbed hayrack used up close to the barn. The sidewall decided to fully tear open, the tube blew out a balloon size bubble while I was trying to back away, and it exploded. Just the burst of air knocked me over backwards, but luckily I had not been hit by any shreds. It was a passenger type tire and I had not yet got more than 20 psi into it.

Now I use the 2 hose trick and give them plenty of distance and respect. Stay safe!!

Thanks for that, I need a few I'd say. But heck, even 10x6 is cheaper than a new or used tire. I guess I need to get my butt in gear and get some of these nagging issues taken care of. It holds air just fine, but looks like a Maypop. "May Pop at any moment"

jupton: My advise for what it is worth!! Don't try the boot. Last summer I had a tire with an intact bead, but a hole in the side wall so I used two boots and mounted the tire--aired it to 12 pounds and parked the N outside. Shortly afterwards I heard a loud Bang and discovered the sidewall had blown out and forced part of the tube between the fender brace and skin!!! Dangerous if the hole is on the outside. Bought two tires & tubes from Tucker.

Ya I have had some like that and if I looked close probably have a couple right now. Most good farm and home stores will have them if they have tire patches and tubes etc. I have also found if you can find them the old inner liners help a lot but they are getting hard to find any more. I know where some are but that is because I own them LOL

dangerous tire... Now that I think about it when I went to pic it up that tire had come off the bead about a third away around the rim and I pushed it back on the rim and loaded her.Just now getting to the fix.
