I have a spare regulator for an "N" Ford tractor, I need one for a 1949 8N. There are no markings on the spare regulator. How can I find out if it is for my 8N

It won't be definitive, but a coarse "screen" would be to ask if the terminals are same and in same order, as in B-A-F of A-F-B, etc.

yes. but there is more to it than that alone. Can't tell from looking what the current limit is & whether it matches your generator or not with a visual.
