8N serial number question

A friend of mine just bought an 8n. He swears it is the newer style 8n. The picture he posted shows a right side generator (Alternator in his
case). I got him to send me his Serial Number: Bn4511 with a star before and after. I know the stars are significant but I can't remember
how. Looks to me like he's missing two numbers. I'm no expert but from the looks he has the older style 8n. I wondered if he got hold of a
"Mutt." He said he got the SN# off the left side of the engine behind the oil filter.
He admitted he knows next to nothing about his tractor as he just got it other than it starts and runs good.

the stars indicate a tractor that came with .040" steel cylinder sleeves. many, such as mine, have since been rebored to take the cast iron .090" sleeves.

left side behind oil filter is the correct location. the serial number as u have posted it would be one of the earliest 8Ns, which is consistent with the stars, rather than diamonds.

Bob, Serial # *8N4511* would make it a 1947 model with steel sleeves originally.Instead of the .040 thickness (Steel)sleeves At serial number 433578 to a cast iron material with a diamond .090" wall thickness (piston size remained the same). A lot of early blocks were bored for the .090 cast iron sleeves at rebuild time.

Edit Tab Needed I guess that will never happen.

It's an engine transplant from an industrial. The BN engine was use on the 9n/2n industrial.
