8n sparkplug

My brother has a ,,I think 1951 8n ford. We were wondering why it has, not sure what to call them, but maybe sparkplug extentions. It is a thing that screws in the sparkpulg hole and then the sparkplug screws into that...Why not put the plug in the head where would think it belongs..What is the propose if it?.. Would appreciate your thoughts on it. Thanks Morris

Sounds like anti-foulers to keep an engine that burns oil from fouling out the plugs.

Thanks Roy,, After thinking about it .. I sure you are exactly right.. Thanks a bunch.

That was a trick to keep a plug form fouling out due to oil burning or a carb that was running way to rich or so as to help burn bad gas. I would try a set of Auto lite 437 plugs with out them and see how it runs that way
