In the interest of sharing what I think I have learned, I thought I would let you know what happened with my 8N starting problem. Somebody suggested I put some oil in each plug hole, and I did that this morning. At first, this only got oil on the plugs and I stopped and did something else. When I came back to it later, though, it started right up. It runs rough and is weak when under any kind of load, so my guess is that it needs an over haul, but I would be interested in your thoughts. I appreciate all of the suggestions.

I'm glad you came here and not the N Board.
They'd have you ripping the head off that poor flattie in no time for a $1500 "Overhaul".
Please don't tear the head off till we give you permission. OK?
How much later was it from the time you put the oil in till it started?
I'm surprised it would start and am thinking you just have fouled plugs.
How long, how hard did you run it after it started?
Normally if I think I have flooded it I take all the plugs out and heat the tips over the flame on the kitchen stove to burn any residue off. Then put them back in. If you got a wife you can use a propane torch to cook them too.
Before you even consider an overhaul you'll want to try some things like a compression test. Plus other things. If you don't know how we'll help you.

for sure do a dry/wet comp test, and check points, voltage to coil and fire order before you break out any real tools.

how's your oil pressure?

The oil pressure is OK. I have to round up some tools to do those tests, but am certainly not going to start tearing it down until I do. Thanks.
