8n starter solenoid

I have a 48 Ford 8n with 6 volt system. Put a new starter solenoid on it and was wondering if the small post is supposed to always be hot? It is the post for the wire that goes to the neutral safety switch. Thanks

If it is the correct solenoid the small post will show "hot" with a test light or Voltmeter, and the solenoid should engage when that terminal is jumpered to chassis ground.

It engages, im just wondering if that small terminal is supposed to always show hot? Or is it supposed to turn off? As of right now if you accidentally hit the N/S switch while working on it, it will turn the engine over, it won't start unless the key is on but it will turn the engine

What you are observing is how the tractor left the factory.

There's a thread down the page a bit that shows what can be done to change it so the engine will only crank with the key switch "ON", should you desire to do that.

The solenoid or relay used would (obviously) need to be compatible with your 6 Volt system.
