8N steering box lube install??

GPO

New User
Got a late 8N that I can't figure how to get lube in the steering box. Can't see any filler port or plug. Help!

GPO.......the secret fill'em-up hole is the bottom of the sheetmetal battery box support bolt over yer right toe. You doubt? Sticka piece of bailin' warr down the hole and probe. Trick is to pump oil thru that bolt hole. There are several how-to's to make a "zerk" fitting to fit the 7/16-14 bolt hole.

We recommend a complete drain (remove left adjuster plate) and refill with 2-tubes of sticky corn-head greese from John Deere. It does NOT leak out like 90wt gear oil and lubes the critical ballnut top bearing. The top bearing is MAJOR cause of 8N steering slop. (tip: warm sticky greese tube in HOT sunshine before pumping) .......Dell, the slickie
