I've managed to remove the old steering wheel with help from PB Blaster, big/small hammer taps on opposite sides of steering wheel shaft, and light upward taps on the bottom of the shaft of the steering wheel itself. Only took about 5 minutes of spraying and tapping, 90 minutes of waiting, and 10 seconds of pulling. Piece of cake.
When I removed the old steering wheel, all that was underneath was the spring and what appears to be the felt seat. According to the explosion drawing in the I&T FO-4 manual, there's supposed to be a seal between the steering wheel and the spring. In my tractor, that seal is missing. It's not up in the old steering wheel and it didn't fall out when I removed the steering wheel--it just wasn't there. It doesn't seem to affect anything, and the only reason I'm replacing the steering wheel is that there are huge chunks of bakelite that are missing from the circumference and it's rough on my hands--and it leaves them jet black after being on the tractor.
My question: should I replace what I guess is the missing seal (Part 8N3570)? While I'm at it, should I just replace the seal, spring, and seat? I'm thinking prudence is called for, so I think I'll replace it all. I plan to reuse the original castle nut and washer because they're original and in very good shape.
Also: Should I put some Permatex anti-seize compound on the splines of the steering shaft before I install the new steering wheel to help prevent corrosion in the future, or is another healthy dose of PB Blaster enough?
Thanks for the help.
