8N Throw out bearing

I split my 8N to replace the ring gear. I was thinking of doing the clutch when I was in there but the disk looks to be fine although I don't know how thick a new one is. I am a bit concerned about the throw out bearing. It spins nice with no noise but it seems a bit loose on the shaft. I can rock it around a bit. Is this normal or should it fit faily tight with no slop?

I do not remember for sure on the N series but on most things the throw out bearing does in fact sit loose so as to help keep it from binding up. It would not hurt to lube it before you close it back up. As for the clutch disk the rivets on it should have a good bit of space before they are level with the fiber part of the disk

Thanks. I have not messed with a clutch in quite awhile but I was thinking the bearing was always a bit loose like this.

Defndr........while you have yer tractor split, replace yer tranny input shaft seal ($3, cheap) just remove the 4-bolts and it is in the top of the hollow shaft you just removed. .........Dell

That bearing is a light press fit on its carrier. The last one I got was a loose fit and made in Mexico. On the clutch you would have to compare the lining to a new clutch. The 9 inch clutch was used in Ford cars and was prone to slipping when worn.Watch out for a worn pilot bearing. If you guess wrong you will have to split the tractor again.

Thanks for all the great advice. I will order the cluch kit that comes with a new pilot bearing. Splitting the tractor was a lot less work than I thought it would be but I sure do not want to do it again. I will order a tranny input shaft seal also.
