8n transmission/rear end

I need to change the fluid in my 8ns readand and transmission. Where to drain it? where to put the new fluid? What type of fluid. I heard it takes about 5 gallons?

You have 3 drain and one fill plug. Drains are under the tranny, center section and rear end. The fill plug is by the shifter so you have 3 drain and one fill common sump for all 3 areas. Book calls for GL-1 fluid but you can also use 134D ford fluid but if you have 3 point problems the 134D will make it worse

Do all three of the drain plugs look like the engine oil drain plug? Also my PTO shaft is loose indicating a bad bearing How big of a job is that? Do i have to drain the fluid first? Where can i get GL-1? (excuse my lack of knowledge, this is my first 8n)

2 of the drain plugs look like the engine oil drain but the center one is more like a pipe plug used in pipes. GL-1 can be hard to find best place to get the fluid is a NH/ford dealer also Case/IH since it is now part of NH/ford

PTO bearing isn't that bad of a job. Just did mine. You will need a torch to heat up the seal sleeve when you put it back together. That whole job only taked about 30 in parts. Good time to do it is when you have rear end drained.
