8N transmission top plate

I'm going to be pulling the top plate on my transmission to replace the starter switch. (My 8N has had a key start since I bought it--I bought a new solenoid to revert to the proper start, only to find the starter switch was only intermittently working...)

I have the new starter switch and the top plate gasket.

But I know there's a trick to removing the plate--something about a spring that needs to be caught. Can someone please advise on the proper technique to remove/replace the top plate?

The spring is under the tab on the plate.
The detent ball is under the spring. Be
careful you don't drop one or both in the
transmission!

Or forget to put them back.........

Just noticed that a page seems to be missing. And it's the page that discusses the actual removal of the cover!

Also, is there a higher resolution version on the web somewhere--I can squint and read most of it, but a higher res would be nice!

Actual removal isn't hard. Take the bolts out and lift it.
I always take them off with the tractor in neutral so I know
where the shifter should be when I put them back on.
If your dash is still in place you will have to wiggle it around.
You can pry the dash forward slightly to get the bolts out.

Here's the tab at the back that holds the spring.
As long as it doesn't stick to the cover you should be good.
It should stay in the hole.
