I am a new owner to a 1950 8n. the man I purchased it from did not know a lot about it nor do I. most of the tractors I have either rented or borrowed in the past have been 1980 or newer. I do believe I have fiqured just about everything out with the exception of an L shaped lever on the right hand side of the transmission. could anyone shed some light on what it is?

Is it in the general location circled in red or maybe the little one under
the seat circled in green? My handle in the red would be different.

"Look like a hupp transmissinon ! probably a step up"

I agree. That's what's in my picture too.
Mine had a shifter handle from a Sherman transplanted.
His looks to have the correct handle.

John did tell me there was a conversion kit for the Hupp
step-ups to convert them to Hi-Lo. Mine didn't have it.

So what is it for and how does it work?

It gives you twice as many gears. 8 forward, 2 reverse.
To put it in the other range, stop the tractor so it is not moving,
press the clutch in, move the handle to the other range, then
use the regular shifter to select your gear.
Easy to see the difference if you drive it in first or second, stop,
move the Hupp shifter then go again in the same gear.
You don't have to take the regular transmission out of gear, but
you really should stop any movement or you could damage gears.

Thank you all for your help. I will try it out. So far I have been extremely happy with my purchase of this tractor

will do! for now this is a working tractor, but I may end up restoring it since it has such little wrong with it and these books would come in handy. from what I can tell it only has minor things missing(the air cleaner jar, its keeper and the light switch. the motor even starts and runs better than I expected out of an old points system. it appears that this tractor wasn't used very much, over the years and was decently maintained.

Nothing wrong with the old points system. My 52 N has always had it and it has been many years since I replaced any of it. I clean and reset the points once in a blue moon or actually, almost never. Tractor gets used several times a week.

(quoted from post at 08:58:51 02/16/18) well since I have this and it does work will that allow me to run a tiller on this tractor?
Not very well, It also slows down the PTO speed. One to run a tiller is the Howard which mounts aft of the trans and does not slow the PTO down.

Yes it is possible Because the hupp sits in front of the main trans and the howard sit behind the main trans. Your hupp step up in the step up range will also speed up the rotation of the
PTO shaft. The howard will reduce speed and not reduce the speed of your PTO shaft This is why the howard trans is the way to go for rototilling.
The one I have for sale is a sherman step down with a howard with a 2n transmission. Will separate should you want the howard. Hit the link. When you hit the link you could also see
another. link to a youtube of the howard.
