I have a cracked block on the engine in what I am determing to be a late 2N tractor as it has the 6 lug tires and 2n pedals with the oval style rather than I beam style arms. However the engine numbers are illegible but there is a 8N cast into the block on the lower left side with some type of rebuild tag above that. Can I be sure then this is an 8N engine as I am not clear that this is diagnostic? Thanks John Ayres

I'm not real sure what you are getting at.

1, sounds like you have a mutt. 6 lug fronts are 8n fronts. ( easy enough to swap hubs )

2, a block with an 8n casting number is in fact.. a 8n block.. ( some industrial options too ).

3, all 9n, 2n, and 8n engines bolt to all 9n-2n-8n trannies.

if you are merely looking to swap blocks.. just match front mount ot front mount..or side mount to side mount

I was primarily trying to determine what type of engine I have on what appears to be a mutt already. The purist in me would want a 9N engine however then a total re paint would be n order and my main motivation is to get this rototiller tractor operational. As my post yesterday was to find out if you could interchange 8 and 9 N engines I had sought to get the serial number to determine what in fact I had and this is confirmation that the 8N on the block makes this an 8N emgine on a 2 N tractor. I can go with the conviencie of swaping over from 8N engine to 8N engine or go with an original 9N and figure out how to hook up everything back to right and have a paint job for a 8N on a 2N to deal with.

if it's a mutt.. I wouldn't worry about finding a specific engine to go back with.

ps.. later engines = a lil more hp.

lastly.. hope you have a howard tranny

As Soundguy says it's a mutt.
I wouldn't get caught up in some purist notions over it. If the engine is bad scrap it, sell off the parts and get another tractor that's original if you want to get purist.
Don't go getting caught up in restoring it either. Or rebuilding the engine.
You'll soon have $4+ Grand into a tractor that's worth half that.
Take the $4+ Grand and buy a newer tractor.
One you can rototill with if that's your need.

Is this a front mount distributor engine John?
If so, there's very little difference in 8N vs 9N/2N blocks.
Paint isn't something I would worry about.
Paint the engine before putting it in if you like.
The governor and the linkage may need to be swapped
from old to new if it were swapped last time it was changed.
I can't really see that linkage in your earlier post.
It was probably left 9N/2N bolted to the top of the head?

I bought it because of the Howard trans, Sherman and the rototiller on the back as I knew the engine was shot but still worth buying! Thanks for all your help!

Where are you located?
I have a 2N engine I would sell reasonably priced.
Shipping would kill most deals on a engine I would think.
