A friend of mine and his brother each have what I believe to be 9N or 2N tractors; they both have 3 speed trannys.
They are both light grey and red but I know that means practically nothing.
They both live hundreds of miles away and I don't have the serial numbers yet but they both have 8N-C cast into, from what I can tell from the pics, the engine blocks at the point where the tranny bolts to the engine.
I'm guessing that both have had there engine blocks replaced?
I guess I don't know as much about the Fords as I thought I did! LOL

Brian.......yep, 8N engines fitt 9N & 2N 3-speed trannys. All you really need to know is whether the dizzy is the weird 4-nipple frontmount or the more common 5-nipple sidemount. Internally the engines are the same. ........Dell

Thanks again for your replies.
You seem to be confirming what I suspect.
They live many miles away and they are supposed to be getting me the serial numbers off each tractor which will answer the question once and for all.

Here is a picture of my 2N. The engine serial number is impossible to read but the steel wheels, crank, magneto and 3 speed tranny are pretty good proof.

It seems my buddys have convinced themselves they both have 8Ns based on the casting number and I can"t seem to convince them otherwise.

base the machine type on chassie.

chassie is pretty much trans and rear diffy.

if they have 3spd machines with a brake pedal on each side, they have a 9n/2n.

explain it to them like this. if they swapped an engine out of a truck and put it in another brand truck, would the truck brand change??? of course it wouldn't change.

the fact they have an 8n engine in a 2n chassie means they have a 2n with a few more hp possibly.. etc.
