8n with Davis 101 loader

I have a Davis 101 loader and putting it back together. It has a vicker vane pump. I have a Baldwin p40 filter to replace the sock filter. My question concerns the tube that fits in the center of the filter. It has numerous holes where fluid will pass through the filter into the tube which then goes through to the pump. This makes sense. The part I dont get is at the base, the smaller tube fits into a larger tube that also has holes. These hole would draw non filtered fluid into the pump. Can someone explain?

The holes visible in the larger tube just above your nice cork gasket would be drawing filtered oil from inside the filter, so no problem there.

Surely there aren't more holes lower down BELOW the gasket, are there?

Its most likely to prevent starving the pump. Suction side filters are problematic. Mesh strainers with a paper filter on the tank return is far superior.

The screen fits against the cork gasket and over the large tube. Then there is a spring and the the paper filter fits over the small tube. Spring holds screen in place. The old sock filter that the new paper filter replaced has the same hole size to only fit over the small tube.

So the large tube would suck screened oil and the small tube sucks screened and filtered oil.
